Attracting Crappie With A Jig Spinner

Category: Uncategorized

Will a jig spinner work to attract Crappie?

The answer is yes, but all answers are conditional.  Your experience could be quite different from another angler’s because techniques that work for Joe may not work for John, and vice versa.  Jig spinners are actually quite popular with many fishermen for catching crappie.

Cabela’s jig spinners are easy to use.  Just attach the safety pin to the jig you already have, and it will actually increase your effectiveness in catching not only crappie but also bass and panfish.  The Cabela models come with a Colorado blade or a Willow-leaf blade, with several colors available.  The Hildebrandt brand, named for John Hildebrandt II who invented the jig spinner almost 30 years ago, is also a great choice.  All are made with solid brass finished in bright nickel or 24 karat gold.

The reason a jig spinner will work well for crappie is that these fish look for motion from their prey.  They tend to have short attention spans and can be easily distracted from a jig being bottom-bounced or floated.  However, a jig spinner is – guess what – spinning as you troll it or retrieve it, flashing motion in front of the crappie you want to attract.  When the fish bites, it will catch the hook as opposed to the blade on the spinner, so you get a better latch onto the fish and can real it in.  This is especially important with crappie, since they tend to try to “eat and run”, taking the bait or lure right off your line.
