Some of the best bass fishing in the world is found on the lakes in Southern Vancouver Island. In fact, nearly all the lakes in Southern Vancouver Island are bass habitats, but some of them are just so spectacular that they sort of eclipse the really good bass fishing on the other lakes found there. One of the best places to fish for bass on Vancouver Island is Elk Lake. It is just North of Victoria, and is really easy to get to. The small mouth bass in this lake are plentiful, fat, and eager! Most average around three to four pounds each. Just as good, if not better, than Elk Lake is Saltspring Island’s St. Mary’s Lake. With smallies in excess of nine pounds being pulled from its waters, the sheer number of smallmouth bass in the water is often secondary to the colossal size of the smallies that can be the reward of the angler’s efforts. Other good bass lakes on Vancouver Island are: Quennell Lake Long Lake Langford Lake Shawnigan Thetis Prospect Beaver Lake In the winter, try fishing a black and red 4″ Tournament edge flake tube on about a inch darterhead jig. Keep it at between 14 and 27 inches of water near the steep structure, and you are going to find some bass. In early spring, prespawn, the bass will move from deep to shallow water several times a day to feed. They will not be as observant or cautious at this time either. Use Crawdads and baitfish as bait and pay close attention to structure rich areas about 40 to 50 feet deep or shallows less than 15 feet deep. In summer concentrate on the backs of coves, up creeks, or shallow staging areas. Use shad as bait or fish crankbaits. In Fall, topwater baits work well, and remember, these fish have had almost all year to grow. You can throw bigger bait, because bigger bait catches bigger fish. Shallow water, along banks with vegetation, and over deep water brush.
