When Crappie start their spawn how long are they in the spawn? Also will they hit during all this time?
Crappie will begin to spawn when the water temperatures approaches 65 degrees. In the south, that can be as early as mid to late February, or up north, as late as June or early July. So on a international basis, you could say the spawn takes place over a 4-month period. From late February to June, chances are, crappie are spawing somewhere in the US, Mexico or Canada. The spawing season for different regions vary, but on average, you can count on 4 to 6 weeks of good crappie fishing. Up north, the season is shorter, so you may only get in 3 weeks of prime angling. It all hinges around water temperature….65 to 70 degrees. Spawning for individual pairs of fish comes in stages. The first stage is Pre-Spawn, when the males move in and select suitable nesting spots. Then, there is the actual Spawn, where the females come in, breed and lay eggs. Then, the females move off to sulk, and recover, leaving the males to guard the nest until the eggs hatch, and the fry are free-swimming. This takes anywhere from 3 to 5 days. Then, the males leave their progeny to their fate, and go off to sulk. Crappie can be very moody anytime other than spring. The whole process probably occupies a pair of crappie for the best part of 10 days. But crappie do it in waves. So for several weeks, there are many pairs of crappie spawning at any given time. When the water temperature approaches 75 degrees, they are done for the year, and move into deeper water. Happy fishing.
