What are crappie attracted to? What should I use for lures?
Crappie are attracted to wood more than any other form cover. Standing trees with lots of branches under the water are your best bet to find large concentrations of Crappie. Fallen timber and even man made structures are also great places to start Crappie fishing. These places will work year round, but are best is early spring to the middle of summer. As the warmer water comes in the Crappie will then move to much deeper water. For lure nothing beats a jig tipped with a small lively minnow when fishing for Crappie. I like pink and chartreuse for jig colors. I will also use white on occasion. If you are fishing water that is stained or murky then you may want to use the florescent varieties of these colors to enhance their visibility. Crappie fishing is an activity that is as much about holding depth as any other factor. Crappie like to suspend and feed at certain depths that can change from day to day and even hour from hour. You can fish in water that is ten to twelve feet deep and catch Crappie at eight feet one day and near the bottom the next. There are Crappie rigs available that have multiple hooks set at foot intervals that will help ascertain the depth the fish are feeding on a given day. Crappie can spook easy. It is often best to cast beyond the target area and slowly use the retrieve to place your bait in the target area.
