What is a good crappie rod and reel set up, and what size rod and reel should i use thanks ben.
The best setup for fishing Crappie will very depending on the body of water you are fishing. For the most part though you cannot go wrong with the setup I will describe in the following paragraphs. I like to us ea six and a half foot rod for Crappie fishing. The main reason I like the added length is you will often be fishing brush piles and other areas that will require a short but soft cast that can only be accomplished by flicking the wrist. The longer pole will help in this regard. I advise using a high quality rod that is light to very light action. Crappies do not strike a jig as hard as some other fish. They often just pick it up in their mouths and head upward. You will therefore require a rod that is extremely sensitive so you feel the majority of the pickups. You also need to go light on the reel. For Crappie fishing I prefer one of the Shimano series of reels with multiple ball bearings and a high retrieve speed. Since you will be using light line you do not need a very big reel. I don’t think you will ever need more than fifty yards of line. They key piece of tackle when Crappie fishing is the line. I advise using fluorocarbon line for its invisibility qualities. There is absolutely no reason to use line heavier than four pound test strength, two pound test strength is preferable and will result in more hookups.
