Horse-Head jigs with Spinners - These crappie lures got their name from
their unique design. The nose is bent in a downward position making
them look similar to a horse's head. This causes a wiggling motion that
attracts the attention of the crappie. They are slightly heavier than
other designs making them prefect for fishing in deeper waters.
However, they are not recommended for fishing for crappie that are
suspended or for the ones in a picky mood.
Soft-Plastic Jig Lures - These work great for crappie when they are
suspended and many times when they are being finicky. They look and
feel real making it very difficult for the crappie to tell the
difference between your lure and the real thing. Normally, the one inch
to the two inch sizes are the best to use for crappie.
Tube Jigs - The tube jig is fast working its way up to being the number
one crappie jig. This unique design offers many benefits and seems to
capture the attention of the crappie and draw them in your direction.
To make sure that you are always prepared to reel in the crappie each
and every time you go out it is recommended that you carry a variety of
jigs with you on every trip. Carry different styles, sizes and colors.
You never know for sure what you will run into when on the water and it
never hurts to be prepared.
Presentation
Keep in mind that regardless of which type of crappie lures you use,
your presentation is always a huge factor in your success. You can be
using the most realistic lure designed and be in the middle of a
feeding frenzy and hardly get a bite if your presentation is bad. It is
your job to use the lure in a way to get the attention of the crappie.
To do this, you need to make sure you are presenting the lure in a
realistic way.
For example, it would be unusual for a worm to move at incredible
speeds through the water. Think about how fast you are reeling in the
lure and keep your presentation real. This may take some practice but
with time you will be able to notice the results. A great crappie lure
combined with a good presentation is the recipe for success.
