As far as reels go, the Sustain model never fails on a hook-set, and the Calais is also an excellent crappie fishing reel. However, you can achieve similar results with much less expensive products like the Cabela products. Although the dream combination might be a St. Croix rod with a Sustain reel, your money may be better spent on a couple of less expensive combinations that will give you great results.
Flexibility and sturdiness must be balanced when choosing your
crappie fishing reels. If your rod is not flexible enough, you’ll
find that either your crappie pop right off the end of it or that
you can’t tell when you have a bite on the line. If your reel
is not sturdy enough, it will be too easy for a large catch to
simply unravel your line and take off with it, and you’ll never
be able to reel anything in. You want to be able to use your reel
with different models of rods as well so that you can test the
combinations and find the one that works best for you. If you
plan to be out on the lake all day every day, you’ll want a comfort
grip on your crappie fishing reels to avoid hand cramps and stiff
or sore wrists. If you take all of this into consideration, you
are sure to make the right purchase and enjoy your crappie fishing
reels for a long time to come.
