For the best spring crappie fishing, use jigs that are red or
chartreuse so that they are more attractive through the murky
water that is stirred up from the movement of the crappie spawning.
If you are fishing for crappie in clear water, you should try
a transparent jig that will refract light and be appealing to
the fish you seek.
You’ll also learn to tell fish depths by how early your lures
disappear. If you lose sight of your jig at four feet below the
surface, you should be looking for crappie at depths of about
seven feet or more. Always add about three feet for best results.
Early spring crappie fishing also calls for light action rods
with fast tips for vertical fishing. There will be little really
movement during pre-spawning season, and you’ll be able to vertical
fish and find some large specimens that you should reel in with
eight pound test line. For trolling, switch to a fiberglass pole
with a fifteen pound test mono line. Spring crappie fishing is
the most productive seasonal fishing in the United States and
calls for anglers to make their first trips out to the lake for
the year.
