Do you have any tips for fishing crappie in farm ponds?
Fishing for Crappie in farm ponds can be similar or different than fishing for Crappie in lakes. Much is dependant on the nature of the pond you are fishing. Many things remain the same. I would attack a farm pond with the same arsenal of weapons as a large lake. A supply of jigs in both florescent pink and chartreuse would be the first order of business. I would tip the jigs with small lively minnows and either cast them or suspend them under a small bobber and work them throughout the confines of the pond. One allowance I always make when fishing farm ponds is that I scale my equipment way down if I feel the pond has been fished extensively. Fish in small ponds like this learn to avoid fishing pressure much better and quicker than their counterparts in large lakes. Scale the line down to four pound test or if you feel skilled enough even two pound test line. The lighter you use the better your results will be. You may not be able to find the classic Crappie spots in a farm pond. They will not often have standing or fallen trees that present themselves as obvious fishing targets. Remember that the Crappie is an adaptable fish and will locate other forms of cover. Look for large rocks for instance that might hold fish. In the absence of rocks you can even look for weed lines. If the Crappie is the dominant fish in the pond without fear of predation it will act as the dominant species, a much different behavior than it displays in most lake situations.
