Good Choices for Crappie Rods and Reels

Category: Uncategorized

Do you have a rod and reel preference for Crappy fishing?

Any good crappie set-up will be lightweight in nature because of the nature of the fish. In most cases, lightweight equals flexibility and sensitivity.

Jigging is one of the preferred strategies for crappie fishing. To do this, the rod tip needs to be directly over where the fish are feeding. And since crappie prefer to lurk where there is brush cover and shade you need a long pole to get under the brush. This is true when fishing from a boat or from the shore. The most popular choice is about a ten foot pole.

The most common construction for poles are either telescopic or sections.

The reel you will want to use will also be lightweight. Crappie are not monsters or overly heavy fighters so there is no need to overdo it.

A baitcast, or, open reel with a very light drag is advisable and there are many good ones on the market for a good price. For example, you can buy a good quality Wally Marshall rod and reel combo package for around fifty dollars.

Some crappie fishermen choose to go with a completely different set-up. Again, this is personal choice. I would call this rig a minimalist type rig. In this case you use a cane pole with no reel. Then you tie a length of monofilament line to the eye on the tip of the pole. The length of the line should be equal to the length of the pole. Obviously, this is because you will be tipping the pole up to bring ion your catch (no reel).

I hope this answers your question and you catch some big ones!
