GPS or Not?

Category: Uncategorized

Do I need to purchase a GPS if I’m planning on fishing for Crappie?

Do you need a GPS (Global Positioning System) when fishing for crappie? Good question. Strictly speaking, no. There is no reason why you can’t just rely on the old standbys, namely memory, eyballs, compass, and landmarks. But you might like one in order to relocate that really hot spot that you found.

It might behoove you to keep a log of the date, how they were biting, and the GPS coordinates every time you go fishing for crappie. That way you can pinpoint the exact spots that really produce for you. Not only that but you can tell when that spot is hot and when it is not. (That’s what the log date is for.)

Another reason a GPS might be handy is just in case you want to share a spot with a crappie fishing buddy. Rather than say, “Ok, from the boat launch head west for a while and then take a turn when you see that big oak tree….” You get  the picture. A GPS coordinate might do the trick a little easier.

Another reason might be in case of emergency. For example, if you witness a skier getting run over or a drowning or a boat crashing into a stump - almost anything, you can quickly notify the emergency response folks on your cell phone (didn’t think you needed one of those a few years ago either, did you?) and give them the coordinates. They might have quite a time locating that oak tree too!

So in conclusion, like most modern gizmos, you probably don’t need one but unfortunately they eventually make themselves a requirement. Oh yeah, and your buddy might want to share a hot spot with you!
