What will happen if I use a line that is heavier than what my reel is rated to hold?
Buying a reel can be a daunting task if you are not sure what you are looking for. Many new comers to fishing will purchase a reel that is within their budget, looks good and feels right in their hands but dont normally think about the effects of line strength on the reel.
Each reel has been built with a limit on line strength in mind, this means that if the line strength limit is fifty pounds then anything over this could affect the ability of the reel you are using in different aspects from basic fishing techniques to actually catching fish.
If you decide on fishing line with strength that is higher than the reel you using allows then you could end up affecting the ability of the reel as the line could weigh more than the reel is capable of holding meaning it will causing te line to slip when casting or reeling in.
Another, more important note to think about, is that if you were to catch a fish that the stronger line can hold but is heavier than the reel can stand then you will probably not land the fish as your reel will buckle under the pressure being put on it meaning the line may just get pulled out by the fish and the reel cannot reel it in, or worse the reel may become damaged and break as the pressure is too great.
Remember, when buying a reel it is important to check what strength line the reel can accomodate and what weight it can carry up to so you can fish for those larger fish that every game fisherman wants to catch.
