How big is the world record crappie ever caught?
The world record Black Crappie is five pounds. The world record White Crappie is five pounds and three ounces. Recently there have been more than one Crappie caught that was bigger than both of these fish. These catches were not classified as World records however because the fish were natural hybrids of the two species. This hybrid species is not recognized as a true game fish. Crappie of this size are of course very rare. In fact it is a rare moment when you catch either of the two species of Crappie larger than three pounds. This represents in my opinion a true trophy level fish that is worthy of the taxidermy shop. To catch trophy Crappie you need to start thinking outside the mainstream. These fish have attained such size by being different than the others of their species that have wound up either in the belly of a larger fish or in a fisherman%u2019s live well. Unlike smaller versions of the species trophy Crappie do not school in large numbers. You will find them in very small schools or even solitary. Crappie in general are a species that schools by size. The largest crappie I have caught have come from the places that were hardest to get to. When targeting this species you need to take the extra time to find a fishing location that is hard to reach by boat. Once there though revert to fishing near wood. A solitary fallen tree in a remote location is the ticket to large crappie.
