How should I catch spawning crappie?

Category: Uncategorized

I’m getting excited for the spring spawn. I’ve never fished the spawn before. Is there an easy way to catch them?

Catching crappie during the spawn is about as easy as fishing gets .Many people wait specifically for the crappie spawn, and do not crappie fish any other time of year. The action is fast and furious. They will be in shallow flats near cover, in 1′-4′ of water. They will attack anything that comes near the nest that they can get in their mouths. One of the easiest ways to catch them is with a cane pole. Simply rig it with a 1/16th oz. jig and dangle it in likely places. You don’t even have to wade. Use a 12′-14′ pole, or a telescopic ‘crappie’ pole to reach the fish. You can also rig it with a small split shot and a small live minnow. Another way is to use an ultra light spinning or spin-casting rod and reel with jigs rigged under a float, or a live minnow under a float. For the ultimate in fun, you can use a fly rod, and any fly that remotely resembles a minnow. This is a great way to break into fly-fishing. Whichever method you use, crappie are not hard to catch during the spawn. They will bite anything that comes near them. All you have to do is find them. Look for spawning crappie in shallow bays, cove inlets, river mouths, near points and overhangs…anywhere there are sandy flats with nearby cover. Oftentimes, you will be able to see the fish on their beds. Do not wade, or you will run all of them off. Likewise, do not try to go directly over the beds in a boat. They are too shallow, and the crappie will bug out. Happy Fishing!
