The truth is that you can catch a crappie with just about anything that you have. This is probably the easiest fish to catch. For crappie fishing, you can use a spinning reel and rod. This is a common set up and can be used for fishing other fish as well. For a beginner, you can use a six-foot graphite rod with a reel with a trigger to trip the bail. For the test line, you can use hi-visibility line, monofilament is great. The test line should be between four to eight pound test line. If you have this set up, you should only need the bait and a jig. The crappie is easy to catch on a jig with a minnow. You can do without the fish locator if you plan to fish lakes where you can talk to other anglers. They can give you more information as to where the fish are schooling. This would be the area to try first. Using a map of the water you are going to fish is another help. You can look for the weed beds and underwater rock structures. With this equipment, you will definitely be catching some nice crappies for the table your first day out. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have any bites right away, it takes some time when you are first starting. You have to develop your own method to finding and catching the fish. Once you see what is working the best, you will be on your way to becoming a pro at crappie fishing.
