I am thinking about raising minnows. Anything you can tell me to help?
Raising your own minnows is going to be a project. I knew a guy that raised minnows in his wife’s garden pond. It was a cement pond that was large enough to raise the minnows and then he was ready to head out fishing, he scooped up some water and minnows and away he went. Of course, this is not the way to produce large quantities. I would ask a local bait shop for some pointers. I don’t raise my own minnows, but I do know of anglers that do. I think the sporting goods stores would be able to tell you what you would need to get up and running. It is going to take a large area to raise enough minnows for a daily angler. It reminds me of one guy that raised minnows in large fish aquariums in his basement. He had about six or seven of the largest aquariums he could find and used them to raise minnows. He had a book that he followed and it worked very well. The only concern you may have is that sometimes using minnows from different water sources will repel the walleye instead of attracting them and most times, they die as soon as you put them in different water. It is hard to take homegrown minnows and cast them into cold waters with vegetation and bacteria that was not present in the water where they were raised. If you do decide to go for it, let me know the results.
