Hello just a quick qustion. I wanting to get into crappie fishing but all of the gear I have is not suited for it. What type of rod reel and lin should I be using. I don’t know if it make a differnce but I will b fishing northern ontario waters. Thanks and tight lines
When choosing gear for crappie fishing you have to ask yourself a couple of questions. First question your character. Are you an aggressive fisher or do you like to sit back and have beverage while still catching fish, or like me and some combination of both? The next and possibly more important question is what time of year is it? The first question is a little easier so let us advance onto the last question. This is important in choosing gear because it dictates how and where the crappie will be eating. In the spring or early summer months crappie are the most aggressive in their eating so all you really need is a length of string and a shiny new hook and you%u2019ll be sure to catch something. As long as you are fishing soft water, not ice fishing, chose a pole that is long and light. You want something that gives you good sensitivity and accurate casting ability. I use crappie poles between 8 and 10 feet long, although there are good uses for lengths up to 15 foot such as a technique called spider boats. For a reel pick on that you are comfortable with very smooth actions and will handle very light line. I generally use line less than 5lbs. test. I use bait casting reels because they give me the greatest flexibility. I can sit and watch a bobber floating over a crappie bed or quickly work jig along a brush line or ledge in bottom of the body of the water.
