I was wondering if you know of any spots to crappie fish in or near fort lauderdale. I am off work this weekend, and I don’t know the area at all, and I do not have a boat with me. Can you help me out?
You have 3 great crappie lakes nearby. Lake Okeechobee is a 730+ square mile impoundment formed from the Kissimmee River watershed. It has an average depth of 9 feet, and very healthy populations of crappie, black bass and sunfish. The word Okeechobee is thought to be a Seminole word meaning “Big Water”. The best results appear to be by using jigs. Spring and fall are the best months to fish for crappie. Lake Isokpoga is a 27,000+ acre lake with an average depth of 4 feet. It has good crappie populations. Like Lake Okeechobee, the best results appear to be with jigs. There are also good populations of bass and sunfish. Stick Marsh is a 6500 acre reservoir located near Fellsmere, Fl. It it one of the most under-rated lakes in the state. It does not receive the fishing pressure that its larger relative, Okeechobee and Isokpoga. It is probably the best crappie, bass and sunfish lake in the state. All of these lakes have easy access both from shore, and by boat. They all have plenty of clear shoreline for shore fishing. For best results, use an ultralight or light rod with a light spinning, or spin-casting reel. For live-baiot fishing, use a 1/8 or less sinker with a 2′ or smaller minnow, under a bobber. The lakes are too shallow for a double rig to be of much use, so stick to a standard single-hook rig. Double rigged jigs under a bobber should work very well in these lakes.
