Is a white perch the same as a crappie?

The white perch is a member of the bass family and is not a true perch. It primarily inhabits the Great Lakes. It is a very small fish that generally does not get large than twelve inches long. It does not have much value as a gaming fish but does have value as a food fish. You will seldom see sport fisherman targeting White Perch. Commercial fishermen target them for their food value. They are a prolific spawning fish that multiplies its population quickly. Crappie come in two varieties, the White and Black crappie. Of the three fish mentioned they offer the highest game fishing value. Both varieties can reach over four pounds and pound for pound fight much harder than the White or Yellow Perch. The White Crappie is more prevalent in the South while the Black Crappie is more likely to be found in cold water Northern lakes. They inhabit much of the United States, spawn in spring and can generally be found in or around trees. They are a primarily shallow water fish in spring and early summer. When the water gets hot they migrate to the deeper areas of the body of water they inhabit. As you can see these two species are not the same. The term %u201CWhite Perch%u201D has however been used incorrectly to identify Crappie. This is especially true in the Southern United States. Please be aware that this is a slang term and not a correct identification of the fish. Both fish are in fact members of the bass/sunfish family and are not true perches at all.
