is it ever to cold to fish for crappie?
Actually, no, it is never to cold for crappies because they seem to bite more in the bitter cold. The only thing you have to concern yourself with is how fast you move the bait in the water. Remember al most every fish species is slower in colder waters. The crappies are no different. Look for crappies in areas that are receiving a southern exposure. You should find an abundance of crappies there. The bait you use should be a smaller size minnow or better yet a plastic minnow. Crappies are good winter fish. It is not unusual to see anglers out looking for crappies more so than any other fish. The fight is not as strong in the winters, but there is somewhat of a fight, but not anything, you cannot handle. The main thing about fishing for crappies is that they are going to be close to schools of baitfish. You will have to know the area or use a fish locator to find them. Once you do find the spot, present the bait as near to the fish as possible without spooking them. You can use this technique on the ice or in the boat. The only thing you will have to think about is how to keep warm when you are fishing for winter crappies. It is always best to use different bait if the fish are not biting right away. Live bait will probably work the best, but also consider artificial lures for a change if the fish are slow to bite.
