Is sac-a-lait the same as crappie? What is a sac-a-lait?

Sac-a-lait is the name by which both black and white crappie are known in Louisiana, especially in Southern Louisiana, but white crappie are more commonly called by this special Cajun name for one of anglers’ all time favorite fish. They spawn in the springtime when they spawn, but can actually be caught all year long, thought they are much less active in any temperature extremes, be it very hot or very cold water. They are schooling fish, and are one of the most popular game fish in America. If you wish to catch Sac-a-lait, here are some tips that just might help! Fish for Sac-a-lait with small jigs or natural bait such as smaller fish If you want to night fish, use artificial underwater lights If you are fishing and the bite suddenly stops, change colors of lures or just fish a bit deeper to get them biting again. Threadfin shad, shrimp, or whatever natural forage exists in your area will tempt the most picky sac-a-lait. Shiners, hair jigs, and tube jigs all catch their share of crappie, but don’t forget crappie nibble when the heat is on, and you just gotta get something on your hook. When you are fishing with shiners, try 14 pound test line and #2 Tru-Turn hooks in gold. Good colors for artificial bait to catch sac-a-lait are: blue and white glow, black and chartreuse, and red and white glow if the day is cloudy.

Yes SAC-A-LAIT is the same fish it’s a french name meaning SACK OF MILK because crappie or sac-a-laiti are considered the best tasting pan fish thus the name sac-a-lait.Hope that answers your Question,as far as fishing for crappie use a small lead headed hook and small tube jigs in summer. My favorites are BLUE and WHITE,and BLACK and GREEN or(CHARTREUSE) but several colors will do.Size of lead head does make a difference so have several sizes under a small cork the fish will determine depth but usually a foot to three or more.Cast bait towards your target (grass pile or tree lay down) pop (jerk) your cork but not too fast about every 5 to 30 seconds after a few jerks retrieve bait and cast again. In winter pull up slowly to lay down and try fishing tight line (no cork) in lay down bob jig slightly every few seconds or use shiners (small fish) enjoy, and good fishing.

Black and white crappie are caught the same way with small jig heads and tube jigs or minnows or shiners.Black and White crappies are close cousins and both are delicious.Black crappie have broken black stripes on their side and white have broken black lines also just less of them. They are caught the same way in the same locations. You might hit a group of black crappy then hit another group of black crappie but I think the white ones seem to group together in larger groups in winter in my experience but it may vary where you live.
