My cousin is taking me fishing for crappie in Lake Scugog. What can I expect in terms of where to find them and what they bite?
When you go fishing at Lake Scugog, you can expect to have a fun filled day of catching crappies. The lake is home to walleye and perch, but has an abundance of crappies. The crappies can be found around the river mouths or you can easily fish the Scugog River for crappies. The warm waters will production many slab crappies. If you plan to catch your daily fill, then you want to use a jig and a minnow. You should do ice fishing in Lake Scugog because that is when you get the biggest catches. The early morning hours and the night hours are the best time to fish for crappie. Sometimes you will find the crappies schooled with the pickerel. All you have to do is fish the bottom of the water and you will surely have some bites. Use a light line in the winter if ice fishing, because the crappie are light biters and very fussy eaters. You need to be very steady with the rod as to not jerk to fast and scare the fish away. You can use a small spoon if you prefer, but either way, you have to have the right tackle and bait. If one bait is not working, try something different until you find what works the best. Another important reminder is to use the minnows or baitfish that comes from this particular lake and not from another water. Crappies can tell the difference in taste and bite and release if the minnow is not what they are accustomed to eating.
