Do you have any advice for 3 guys that are beginners, going to lake ouachita for the first time to catch crappie?
Lake Ouachita is one of the cleanest lakes in the world. It is also the largest lake in Arkansas. It is a 44,000 acre+ impoundment made by building the Blakley Mountain Dam on the Ouachita River. The lake averages 50 feet deep, with some holes approaching 200 feet. 20,00 acres of shoreline are open to hunting. The area was not de-forested before building the dam, so the forests are still there, under the water, making for great fishing cover. Many of the trees are over 60′ tall, so use caution when boating on this lake. Also, be aware that SCUBA divers, and SCUBA Schools come from all over the world to dive in lake Ouachita, so look for ‘Diver Down’ flags and bouys when boating and before fishing a particular area. Hooking a diver will most likely not be a pleasant experience for either one of you. There are 3 fishing docks, 28 public boat ramps, 10 marinas, and 1376 campsites, not including the over 200 islands where you can make your own private camp. There are also many ‘islands’ just under the surface. The water depth can change from 50′ to less than 3′ in a heartbeat, so again, use caution when boating on this lake. Lake Ouachita contains one of the very few fresh-water species of jellyfish in the world, as well as fresh-water sponges. Lake Ouachita contains large healthy populations of Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Striped Bass, White Bass, Channel, Blue and Flathead Catfish, Redear Sunfish, Bluegill, Crappie, Rainbow Trout and Walleye. It’s almost a fisherman’s Paradise! I just returned from fishing Lake Ouachita on Mar 12th, 2008 . The water was a bit cloudy and the water temperature was approaching 50 degrees. Crappie were moving around nicely. I caught my limt all three days. The crappie were in 15′-20′ over moss beds and brushpiles. I was fishing near Mountain Harbor Resort. I caught all my crappie on a chartruese marabou jig, size 1/12 ounce. I was jigging vertically with a crappie pole. I hope this helps. Happy fishing!
