I fish for crappie in Red Lake, Minnesota, and I’m not having much luck. Of course, I’m a novice, but I was wondering if you can give me any advice?
Red Lake Minnesota, long known for its great catches of giant black crappie, has seen a tremendous increase in its walleye population in recent years. In fact, it was listed as one of the top ten walleye fishing locations in the entire state of Minnesota. Of course, if you understand that crappie are a natural food source for this rapidly growing walleye population, you will understand why there are fewer crappie present in the Red Lake waters than there once was. Does this mean you can not have a successful day fishing for crappie on Red Lake? Not at all. Many anglers have noted considerable success fishing for crappie during the winter months of the year. If you plan on winter fishing in Red Lake, consider using all the resources available to you. Ask what other fishermen are doing to achieve success. Use sonar to locate drops in the old river beds and drops of 15 feet or more in the floor of the lake. Look for bait fish schools, and fish all these areas. Mark your GPS location, when you find success in a particular area, and then you can easily return to it for later fishing expeditions to maximize the success you will have at that time.
