What do you think is the most important thing you should know when fishing for Crappies?
Without a doubt, the most important thing for crappie fishing is just the same as any other kind of fishing: your fishing tackle. Just like anything else in life, you get what you pay for.
If you buy cheap tackle what will happen? First it just will not perform well overall. You will experience backlash, tangles, all sorts of malfunctions. And when is this most likely to happen? Not in your garage and not on your trip to the lake or pond. You guessed it - when you’ve got that trophy crappie on the other end of the line! Murphy’s law strikes again.
So buy good quality tackle. You will notice I did not say the best. Go ahead if you can afford it - load up with the designer stuff. But thereĀ is really some affordable high quality gear out there; especially if you look for sales. Or if you shop online keep an eye on Cabelas. They have a whole bargain section.
Once you aquire your quality tackle, maintain it properly! Rinse everthing off before you put it up. Keep the grit out of any moving parts. You should do reel maintenance twice a year, at the beginning of the season and again at the end of the season. Just follow the manufacturers guidelines.
And it goes without saying, if you fish from a boat, keep it cleaned and well maintained too. After all, that is what gets you out to your honey holes!
Bottom line, if you take care of your equipment, it will take care of you!
