Is trolling an effective technique when fishing for crappie? Great question! Trolling (pulling your bait through the water with your boat underway) is one of the best and most effective tactics for crappie fishing. Trolling slowly using an electric motor works great. Drifting can be effective in finding elusive crappie in wide open water. When the water heats up they will seek colder water which means migrating away from the shallows into deeper water.

Spider fishing ( or using a few or many rods at the port, starboard, and stern sides of your boat means playing the the odds so that you’re more likely to catch fish. Some crappie fishermen that use this method set out up to ten rods and troll at increasingly different depths trying to locate a crappie school. Also, remember that fishing with fiberglass rods rather than graphite makes your  fishing easier since fiberglass rods are know to be more limber and will give a deeper, slower arch when you get a crappie hit, minimizing the chance of ripping a lip and losing your pan fish.

If you are having no luck trolling, remember that crappie fishing methods vary according to the time of year it is, the water depth the crappie are occupying, and the layout of the lake or river you are fishing in. A crappie fishing tactic that works great when crappie are running deep, eight to fifteen feet is vertical fishing.
