We just moved to Indiana and are looking to go crappie fishing. Where are the best places? What bait works the best?

If you are near Grant, Wabash or Miami counties, you can fish the Mississinewa Lake. This is a crappie-fishing hole that has anglers catching crappie every day. You can catch ten to twelve inch crappies, but the average is eight to nine inches. The only thing with this water is the fluctuation in the water levels during different seasons. Cagles Mill Lake is in the west central area of Indiana. Years ago, the water was overrun with crappie, but it does seem that it has thinned out a bit, but it is still a good place to fish for crappies. Fish by the old channels for crappie. Look for sunken trees and wood structures near the shore or impoundments and you should find the fish. The southern part of Indiana has Otter and Loon Pits for fishing crappie. The size of the crappie is impressive and there are plenty of fish for everyone. Look around the weed beds and sunken wood. Use a minnow for bait and you should have no problems catching crappies. In May, it is possible to see hundreds of crappie schooling in the swallows. Hardy Lake, which is east of Austin about six miles is another good place to fish for crappies. Although the lake is small, it produces some good catches. It is said that the lake has some nice fat crappies just waiting for the bait. These are the best places to start and I am sure that you will find many more places in Indiana to fish for crappies.

If you have fished Mississinewa then you will like Salamonie Reservoir. It is a flood control reservoir too. Simply use minnows and fish the wood. You can’t go wrong.
