What are some of the basic techniques for fishing around bridge pilings?
When trying to fish around the pilings that are not in the direct sunlight, you need to know that this is the main spot where you will find Crappie in large numbers. When jig fishing, your jig should be allowed to drop to the bottom and then give it a one turn on the reel. The color will be determined by the depth of the water you find yourself getting bites in. While you are bringing it back up make sure you are giving it a small jerk as you take it nice and easy along the way. With each turn, you will learn at what depth the fish are in. When you have no bites after each reel up, you know that the Crappie is not at that level. Continue this technique until you do have a bite. For those fishing off a bridge or dock that contains a horizontal brace underneath the water, your jig should be placed a few feet off the brace and moved very slow around the brace itself. Your line should not be a heavy line and should be no more than 8 pound test line. Your hooks of choice should be set at the smallest strike or if there is any pressure on your line as you jig it around. In the brushy areas you will find the abundance of the Crappie. The morning time is the best for them being higher in the water than in the later hours of the day. The brighter the sun gets the deeper the Crappie go in the water.
