The black crappie prefers to feed on crustaceans and insects more so than other fish like the white crappie. The black crappies usually nest when the water reaches a temperature of sixty degrees F. The white crappie male is sometimes confused with the black crappie because during the spawn, the white crappie males turn a blackish color, however, the black crappie males do not have any color differences during the spawn. The black crappies can be found in 48 states and thrive in clear waters more so than the white crappie, which can thrive in any water condition. The male will build and guard the nest until the young are hatched and then protects the young until they take off on their own. The fish will frequent weed beds and shallow waters during the early mornings and late evenings. Some anglers have said that the best crappie fishing is at night when the darkness comes over the water. The black crappie is similar in weight to the white crappie, but does have more body construction than a white crappie that has more length. One can use jigs, lures, spoons and night crawlers to catch a black crappie. The average weight of a black crappie is about three to five pounds. However, the length made be less than ten inches for a good catch. Both the white and black crappies will taste the same as many anglers will tell you. The black crappie like the white crappie is a member of the sunfish family.
