Crappie is probably one of the most popular table fish in the nation. There are many types of gear on which you can catch crappie, and the good news is that you are basically limited only by such things as personal preference and budget, because crappie can easily be caught on most any kind of gear that appeals to you. One good way to determine what you should buy if you are a new angler, is word of mouth. Speak to other fishermen, bait shop owners, sporting goods salesmen, and fishing guides. Most fishermen have found certain brand names that appeal to them, and a good way to determine what brands tend to hold up well is to listen to what those who use them have to say about them. A general rule of thumb is that once you do your research, you should just shop around. Take some time to hold the rods, get a feel for what feels right in your hands. Then, buy the best quality that you can afford. Spinning rod and reel combinations are popular choices for new anglers and work well for catching crappie. Some good criteria on which to base your choices is: Spinning rods anywhere from 5 to 7 feet in length. Shorter people normally handle a slightly shorter rod better. Small spinning reels are good choices for crappie fishing. Try to get spare spools for quick changes based on the conditions of your fishing waters. Try to buy the best quality line you can. A high visibility monofiliment type of line in about a 6 pound test usually works well, and allows you to see movement on the line really quickly which can be very important. These choices will allow you to use whatever bait you feel most comfortable with, while being good, solid choices for beginning crappie fisermen.
