Fishing researcher, Dan Eggertsen, answers a variety of questions concerning how you can catch crappie quickly and easily.

What is the normal length and weight for a crappie?

Category: Uncategorized

I want to find out if 10″ is good size or not. What is the average weight and size of legal crappie?

Fishing for crappie can become frustrating. It only makes it worse when you do not know if you are catching a large fish or a mediocre fish. Unfortunately, the only way to know what size fish you will get is to fish the area regularly. Crappie will range in size and weight readily. In fact, you may find that the 10 inch fish that you caught in one area is large compared to the eight inch fish that is found a few states over. Crappie is also a basic term. There are various types of crappie. They are also found throughout the world. This too makes it difficult to say what the average weight will be for the crappie you catch. Unfortunately, I’m unsure where you are located. For example, if you were fishing in Lake Orange in Virginia, your average weight for crappie would be about one and a half pounds. The average size for these fish are about 8 inches long. On another note, if you were fishing for the same fish in Nolin River Lake in Kentucky, you would find crappie as large as 15 inches (sometimes more!) On the flip side, in Minnesota, you will find black crappie at an average of just half a pound and over 9 inches in length. The same fish in another area will get you about one pound to one and a half pounds. The best way to know if you are getting a good sized fish for your area is to fish that area well.
