What jigs and jig heads work best for catching crappie?

Category: Uncategorized

I’ve never jigged for crappie before. What should I start with?

As a beginner, you will likely find success when you jig for crappie. You do need to know how to do this to be successful, of course! One thing to consider carefully when it comes to jigging fish is what time of the year it is. For example, during the spring, the waters warm and fish are closer to the surface. In this case, you will want to use a very light jig head whenever possible. For example, a 1/16 will work well. Try to use a 1.5 inch bass assassin with a 1/16 chartreuse head on it. (A good choice is a pearl colored version.) During spawning season, this will get you good results. In the summer, the crappie are looking for food and to do that they need to go deeper. In this case, you may want to consider trolling with several rods. You’ll need to monitor the bait’s depth, getting it into their line of attack. This can take a bit of practice and trial and error when you first start out. You may be fishing for crappie during the colder months. A good way to do that is to find a structure of some sort in the water. It should be located in deeper water whenever possible. That’s where the fish are located. Use a 1/8 jig head here with a minnow. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell you a fool proof method. Each area will have fish that like different bait. The key is to get the bait to their level, depending on what time of year it is. Learn their practices and you’ll catch them every time.
