What My Dad Taught me about fishing

Category: Uncategorized

I want to take my kids crappie fishing, but I don’t want them to get bored. What technique is the easiest to show them (and the most successful)?

A father taking his children fishing or hunting is a tradition that has most likely began when time began.  Keeping our children interested has always been a tricky task.  To complicate matters modern fishing is a task that can be extremely boring and downright worthless at times but don’t forget that we fish for many reasons.  The family connection can be one of the most important reasons in today’s world.

My experience tells me that anything providing action and excitement will keep the kids from getting bored, at least to start.  One thing my dad did wan, and I did not realize why until now, he put a floating target over the very active crappie bed.  Then he would put a bobber with a hook about one foot or so from the bobber and ask us to cast to the target.

Occasionally he would cast his line out there with great skill and let myself or my brother reel it in just after the bobber bounced.  This worked really well because just as soon as we got over the excitement of the first fish the next one was biting on bait that I had just cast out.  Do not forget that very kid needs lessons on casting and reeling and never forget to teach safety.  Keep the kids moving and keep talking, heck that’s why you’re here right?

Most kids will learn to enjoy the catch but realize some kids do not and if you are really good you can see that some kids just like spending time with their dad.
