What tips do you have for fishing crappie in Alabama?

The crappie in Alabama is the most active during the month of April. However, if you start fishing in February, the water temperatures fluctuate so much that you can long line troll around the drop off areas where the crappies stage until the water temperatures stay warmer. Then they start to move to the mouths and creeks for spawning. You can fish in depths of between twelve to fifteen feet using the vertical drop into the zone with weighted bait. If you are using live bait, catch the baitfish out of the same water otherwise use a grub or plastic worm. One thing you have to remember about Alabama crappie fishing Is that the success of your fishing can change from day to day. The weather plays a big role in how the fish are biting and where they are schooling. Sometimes you may have a bite and think that more fish are in the area, but the truth may just be that it was the only fish in the area. There are loner crappies that go off on their own. This can be frustrating if you think you hit upon a school. If you get one bite and then no bites after an hour or less, move on. You may have caught the only fish in that area. Always use bait that is working for that day. The best way to know is to ask some of the other anglers what they are using. You might find that an insect is working better than baitfish.
