I want to catch crappie in Nebraska (where I live). Where are the most productive bodies of water for crappie fishing? (I’m willing to drive)
A few places in Nebraska are good for crappie fishing. They are Swanson Reservoir by Trenton, Sherman Reservoir by Loup City, Red Willow Reservoir by McCook, Lake Miniature by Scottsbluff, Branded Oak Lake by Raymond, and Lewis and Clark Lake by Niobrara. There are a few more reservoirs that are also good for crappies such as Box Butte by Hemingford, Elwood by Elwood and Enders by Enders. If you are looking for river fishing, the Missouri River, Elkhorn River and North Platte River are good places to go. You can troll, drift, casting or still fishing. Use live bait and a jig for crappies. If the sun is high, go to the deeper water, if the sun is low or it is a cloudy day, shallower waters will have the crappie by brushes, weeds and down trees. They do high near shores if the weather and cloud conditions are right. Since crappies are school fish, you should have no problem catching enough for dinner. Depending on where you go, talk to the local bait shop to see where the bites are for the day. This helps narrow down the exact area of the water you want to fish. I have seen some good-sized crappies come out of these watering holes. The more you fish certain lake, rivers and reservoirs, the more you will learn about the habitat. The bait is important for the time of year. Spring fishing is different than summer or fall fishing as well so check the bait shops.
